Remember the Darkhorse Marines

Think about the most dangerous part of Afghanistan.  A place where the Taliban still has a stranglehold on the community and can still wage war against American forces.  A place where British troops have lost over one-third of their soldiers.  And now the district – Sangin, in Helmand province in Afghanistan – is where the Darkhorse Battalion (3rd Battalion, 5th Military Regiment) continues to fight against terrorism and fear.

The Darkhorse Battalion has existed as a fighting force since 1917, when they were deployed to France in the battle of Aisne in World War I.  Since then, the Darkhorse Battalion has served our country in nearly every military conflict, from World War II to the Gulf Wars.

Today, the Darkhorse Battalion continues to fight Taliban insurgents and continues to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs and weapons.  And it has come at a very deadly price.  In the span of four days, thirteen members of the Darkhorse Battalion made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their very lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.  Four of the soldiers were killed in a bomb attack on their vehicle.  Two others were killed by sniper fire.

But even with these dangers surrounding them almost every second of their tour of duty, the Darkhorse Battalion still fights to protect our freedoms and to serve our country.  If you have a moment in your day, please say a prayer for the Darkhorse Battalion, and for all our soldiers and sailors serving to protect our country.
